Tips to Keep Your House Warm and Save Money

With winter here you may already be starting to worry about those dreaded electricity bills that come along with heating your home. Instead of cranking up the heat or furnace there are some other things you can do to keep your home warm and comfortable without breaking the bank.

How to Keep House Warm

Insulated Windows
If your furniture is near your windows you’ll probably feel colder during the winter. Avoid placing couches or chairs near large windows or against an outside wall. Also, utilize your curtains by keeping them open during the day so the sunlight warms your home. Close them once the sun goes down for an extra layer of insulation.

Clothing Layers
It might seem easier to heat your home rather than warming yourself up, but it’ll be a lot cheaper the other way around. If you wear some warm socks, a sweater, and a blanket inside you won’t have to turn up the heat so high. You’ll also be dressed warm enough to go outside in a pinch.

Ceiling Fans
If you have ceiling fans you’ll need to change the settings so they turn clockwise during the winter. This will drive the warm air down towards you and can be done by flipping a small switch. You’ll also want to turn off the exhaust fans in your bathrooms and kitchen because they pull the hot air up to the ceiling.

Floor Covering
Adding some area rugs can make the room look warmer, but it can also make it feel warmer. As much as 10% of your home’s heat loss happens through poorly insulated floors, and rugs can help keep that hot air inside.
